Once again parts of Saskatchewan are under a snowfall warning today (April 7th) thanks to a late season Alberta Clipper crossing the province bringing with it 10-20cm of snow for the Yorkton, Melville, Hudson Bay, Melfort, Humboldt, Prince Albert, and Meadow Lake areas. A special weather statement has been issued for Regina, Moose Jaw, Broadview, Moosomin, and Saskatoon areas where most precipitation will fall as rain. Environment Canada says there’s even the risk of a thunderstorm as part of this system moving through.
According to the weather experts at The Weather Network, this has been one of the snowiest winters on record, especially for eastern Canada. For the seventh time in its history, St. John’s surpassed 500cm of snow in a season, but still shy of their record of 648cm set in the winter of 2000/2001. Sault Ste Marie, ON has accumulated 551cm of snow already, which is similar to the amounts reached in Coldwater and Orillia, ON.
As for western Canada, Weather Network specialists indicate Calgary could see their highest snowfall amounts in March and April. According to the numbers crunched by meteorologists, Calgary reached their annual average of 128cm of snow earlier than normal with more snow on the way. Environment Canada’s forecast says rain and/or snow is expected to fall Tuesday night and again over the weekend.
Vancouver, on the other hand, has seen virtually no measurable snow this winter, which is similar to the winter of 2015.
