Artemis II astronauts will literally be making a big splash when they come back to Earth this week. The crew and their capsule is expected to land into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California on Friday and they’ll be returning as record holders. The crew flew farther in space than any other human and captivated the imaginations of millions of kids (and kids at heart) from across the globe.
The point of the mission was to fly around the moon and capture images of what it looks like from the dark side, a side that has never been seen by humans. As the Orion space capsule fly around the moon, Canadian Jeremy Hansen and the entire crew captured some incredible images of the lunar surface, the Earth, and even a solar eclipse. They captured detailed images of the moon’s craters, how the Earth rises over the moon, how they were able to take those pictures, and what kind of glasses they wore to view the solar eclipse from the capsule.
While the images may show a lonely, cold, and barren surface, it has already stoked enthusiasm for Artemis III which will be a mission to land astronauts on the moon in the near future. In the meantime, the focus has shifted to ensuring Jeremy Hansen, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch journey back home safely after a monumental mission to the stars.
