REGINA — The Mosaic Company is playing a big role in both Regina’s and Saskatchewan's economy, according to a report by Economic Development Regina (EDR).
In their study, EDR said Mosaic generated $1.9 billion on average in economic output for the province between 2020 and 2024.
In the same period, Mosaic also provided $880 million in provincial GDP, adding nearly 8,500 jobs.
“This study puts numbers to what Regina and Saskatchewan communities already know: potash wealth doesn’t stay in the ground – it moves through pay cheques, tax bases and community organizations,” said John Bailey, EDR CEO.
Mosaic operates three potash mines in the province of Esterhazy, Belle Plaine and Colonsay.
Recently, Mosaic announced a $4 million investment to help expand the province’s mining workforce. The company also operates a corporate office in Regina.
Municipal impact
EDR’s study notes Mosaic’s outreach has huge benefits for rural and resource-based communities.
“Capital spending alone supported nearly $490 million in output and more than 2,000 contractor jobs in 2024, with municipal revenues especially tied to these investments.”
Bailey said this shows a head office isn’t only a location, but where decisions are made for investment to stay local.
Marnel Jones, director of government & public affairs for Mosaic, said having a local presence means the company is listening and is part of the community.
“It keeps us close to Saskatchewan workers, suppliers, Indigenous partners, and governments – and it helps make sure the benefits from potash stay in Saskatchewan.”
EDR’s study also broke down the impact of Mosaic on an individual basis in Saskatchewan.
"Mosaic’s annual contribution is equivalent to generating more than $1,540 per Saskatchewan resident every year, while annual investment averages more than $1,100 per person in the province,” notes the report.
Overall, during the five-year study timeline, Mosaic invested $6.9B into Sask., helped create $9.7 billion in total economic activity, and contributed $4.4 billion to provincial GDP.
