The Regina Red Sox have added a pair of right-handed pitchers to their 2026 roster, announcing Friday the signings of Izzy Johnson and White Butte Broncos alumna Ryne Griffin.
Griffin is a freshman at Bethany Lutheran University (NCAA DIII) and has yet to pitch this season but has appeared in four games as a shortstop, hitting .375 (3-for-8) with three RBI and two walks.
The White City product attended Martin Collegiate high school in Regina and played for the White Butte Broncos in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League, where he ranked third in the league with a 1.63 ERA and second with a 1.05 walks and hits per inning pitched rating, holding opposing hitters to a .191 batting average.
“He’s always been a skilled kid mechanically and I think that as he continues to grow and get stronger he’s going to develop into a very good collegiate player,” longtime Martin Collegiate Baseball Academy coach Rob Cherepuschak said in a Friday interview.
“Ryne’s always been one of the better players in the area and always a player who competed really well in his age group and his skill set was always ahead of his size so it’s going to be fun seeing how he progresses.”
The Red Sox said in a news release that Johnson will transfer next season to Ottawa University in Kansas after two seasons with Missouri State University-West Plains, where his fastball has been clocked as high as 89 miles per hour.
“Izzy can start, pitch in middle relief, or be used in the backend,” Red Sox field manager Rye Pothakos said in the team’s announcement.
Regina’s season is scheduled to start May 28 with its first home game slated for May 30.
