REGINA — There are several key items on the agenda for this week’s council meeting Wednesday.
These items include:
Asbestos-Cement pipes:
Ward 8 Coun. Shanon Zachidniak is proposing the city look at options to accelerate the removal of asbestos-cement (AC) pipes.
Recent data indicate Regina has about 600 kilometres of AC pipes, which have been shown to pose a risk to public health.
Currently, the city is removing only seven to nine kilometres of AC pipes each year.
If approved, city administration will look at options of removing AC pipes at 10 km/year, 15 km/year, and 20 km/year and any increased renewals would occur over a period of roughly five years.
Waste Plan Regina:
City council will table the Waste Plan Regina, which had been discussed by the executive committee in early April.
The plan notes Regina’s landfill end-of-life expectancy has now been pushed until 2053 as the city’s waste diversion has increased to 40 per cent.
This increase still falls short of the 65 per cent goal, which the city hopes will be addressed with new waste programs, including food and yard waste collection for multi-family properties starting in 2027.
In the next few years, the city also plans to change its waste plan to accommodate the methane amounts that come from landfills.
Early Adopter Incentive update:
The City of Regina has proposed changes to its Early Adopter Incentive program (EAIP).
Created in 2023, the EAIP is a financial aid program for businesses, institutions and organizations for waste collection. New proposed changes incorporate multi-family resident properties into the program, including condo owners.
Condo owners have been working with the city for years on a solution to mitigate paying for food and waste collection through contracted services.
If approved, the multi-family property owner can apply to the EAIP by July 1.
All these items will be considered at Regina’s city council, which begins on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
