REGINA — The Canada 55+ Games is returning to its original roots.
For the first time since its original games in 1996, the event will descend upon Regina in 2028.
“It’s really exciting because we are really good hosts,” said Carol Lafayette-Boyd, chair of the events committee.
Lafayette-Boyd said the event is expected to attract more than 2,000 participants to Regina, who will compete across 15 mandatory events and six optional events chosen by organizers.
These include bridge, pickleball, track and field, tennis and much more.
Participants in the event must be 55 years or older as of 1963, and advance from early qualifiers.
“There is a certain number of people who can come from each province, so then they have to qualify,” said Lafayette-Boyd.
As for the makeup of the field, Lafayette-Boyd said these participants are passionate about staying fit as they get older.
City’s perspective
The City of Regina found out they’d won the bid for the event several weeks ago.
Jennifer Johnson, deputy city manager for Communications, Service Regina and Tourism, said she believes the city's previous hosting of the event played a role in securing the bid.
“I do think these games or events sort of like that anniversary angle, but more than anything, I think that it is our facilities and our volunteer spirit.”
Johnson confirmed the event would be hosted across Regina, including the REAL District.
As for economic impact, Johnson said he couldn’t provide an exact figure, but noted that more than 2,000 participants are expected to deliver a significant boost to local hotels and businesses.
The event returns to Regina from Aug. 21 to Aug. 24, 2028.
