SASKATCHEWAN — Despite the federal gas tax holiday, gas prices in Saskatchewan are up over last week.
“Average gasoline prices declined across most of Canada over the last week following the start of the federal gas tax holiday, which pushed retail prices down early in the week,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
But, he pointed out, relief from the gas tax holiday proved short-lived.
"Developments between the U.S. and Iran — including renewed tensions and setbacks in talks — pushed oil prices higher late in the week, erasing much of that initial drop and lifting prices again in several provinces. With oil continuing to rise, gasoline prices are likely to move higher in the days ahead as global pressures outweigh the impact of the tax break, while diesel is also poised to follow if elevated oil prices persist.”
Average retail gasoline prices in Regina have risen 6.9 c/L in the past week, averaging 167.55 c/L Sunday, according to GasBuddy. Saskatoon's average is 165.53 c/L, up 2.1 c/L from last week's 163.41 c/L.
Saskatchewan's average is 163.34 c/L, up 0.8 c/L from last week's 162.53 c/L. Next door in Manitoba, Winnipeg prices were 65.91 c/L, up 7.0 c/L from last week's 158.93 c/L.
The national average has increased 1.4 c/L during the last month and stands 37.2 c/L higher than this day one year ago.
