GENEVA, Switz. — Canada’s Bruce Korte will play for a medal at the World Senior Men’s Curling Championship, with the only question now being what colour.
Korte and his Saskatoon Nutana foursome of third Darrell McKee, second Kory Kohuch, lead Rory Golanowski and alternate Arlen Hall didn’t lead much to chance in their quarter-final contest on Friday morning in Geneva, Switz., roaring out to an early lead before taking a 10-3 win over Australia’s Geoff Davis.
As a result, Canada now advances to the semifinal on Saturday, with a victory there sending Korte into the gold medal game later in the day.
Korte didn’t waste much time getting things going against Davis, third Steve Johns, second Steve Hewitt and lead Hugh Millikin, scoring three in the first end, stealing another three in the second and tacking on one more in the third for a 7-0 lead. Things were all but academic from there, as Canada held Australia to one in the fourth and added another three-spot in the fifth for a 10-1 edge. Davis picked up a pair in the sixth and the teams opted to shake hands there.
Other quarter-final action saw Switzerland’s Christof Schwaller take a 7-2 win over Slovenia’s Mitja Resman, the United States’ Mike Farbelow down Norway’s Rolf Sagen 7-3 and Scotland’s Tom Brewster get past Germany’s Uwe Saile 7-5.
It’s been a perfect run thus for Korte and crew, as they put together an undefeated 4-0 run through the round robin to earn a bye directly into the quarter-finals.
Canada now faces Scotland in their semifinal, while the United States takes on Switzerland in the other. Those contests take place at 1 a.m. Saskatchewan time, with the winners advancing to the gold medal game at 6 a.m.
