The Saskatchewan Roughriders made a pair of roster moves Friday, announcing the signing of American defensive back Austin McKinney while also placing veteran defensive back Sheldrick Redwine on the retired list.
McKinney, listed at six-foot-two and 200 pounds, joins Saskatchewan after a two-year collegiate run with the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats. The Battle Creek, Michigan, product suited up for 22 games with the Bearcats from 2023 to 2024, finishing his senior season with 31 tackles, one interception and nine pass deflections across 11 starts.
His strong play earned him invites to both the Trillion Tropical Bowl and the FCS Bowl, showcasing his ability against top graduating talent. McKinney also spent time at the Cleveland Browns' rookie minicamp in 2025.
Over his two seasons at Northwest Missouri State, McKinney totalled 54 tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception, 16 pass deflections and a fumble recovery, establishing himself as a consistent presence in the secondary.
Before his time with the Bearcats, McKinney developed at Saddleback College, where he recorded 33 tackles and three interceptions and was named the team’s defensive MVP. He began his collegiate career at Saginaw Valley State University.
Meanwhile, the Riders confirmed that Redwine has been moved to the retired list, signalling the end of his playing career.
