ASSINIBOIA — They say volunteerism is the price you pay for the space you occupy. If that is the case, Howard Ellis had paid for many.
Ellis says when he and his wife Maureen and their sons Justin and Spencer moved back to Assiniboia area, he was soon invited by Dr. Wes Thomson to check out the Assiniboia Kinsmen Club, which is where he says his 33-year volunteer career began.
“Volunteering has been a large part of my life since then. Not just with the Kinsmen but on various committees throughout the years as well,” says the decades-long Assiniboia volunteer.
Ellis said he has worked with other incredibly talented volunteers on committees for the 2002 Keystone Cup; 2005, 2015 and 2022 Provincial Women’s Curling Championship’ 2023 Men’s Provincial SaskTel Tankard, 2022 RCMP Musical Ride and most recently was part of the volunteer crew that hosted the 2025 National Mixed Curling Championship.
This dedicated community volunteer sends accolades to fellow committee members who also deserve recognition.
“The Kinsmen project that I am most proud of is our Chase the Ace lottery. Over the past six lotteries, we have been able to donate over $240,000 to local organizations, which has been an enormous benefit to our community. “

In addition to the committees Ellis has served on and his long-time Kinsmen membership, this Assiniboia volunteer was on Assiniboia Jr. B Rebels executive for 12 years, which included a two-year stint running the annual Smiles per Miles lotto.
Ellis also helps with the Senior Rebels and Junior Rebels by working the time clock, score keeping, announcing and penalty box, as well as helping in the box when Moose Jaw Warriors and Weyburn Red Wings played their games in Assiniboia.
“Community is connection. Through volunteering I have met many people and have gained many lifelong friends. It is helping to create a place we are proud to call home. Our Kin motto is: “Serving the Community’s Greatest Need.” It is a great feeling to know that you have had an influence in someone else’s life, however big or small. Whether it be through raising funds to donate, putting on a recreational event, or driving someone home through a Safe Ride program. I genuinely love my community,” adds Ellis

They say behind every great man is a great woman and Ellis certainly attests that his wife Maureen has been the most influential person who has helped him over the years, supporting his volunteerism along with spending countless hours helping out. Teamwork makes the dream work, as the saying goes.
“I urge everyone to step out of your comfort zone and take on a little extra. There are so many organizations and people in our community that could use help. Please share your time and talents; it will be more than rewarding.”
