REGINA — Regina-based performance company Curtain Razors, which has been bringing innovative performance work to local audiences since 1989, is co-presenting ROSA, a new dance-theatre work by Mexican-Canadian artist Carlos Rivera Martinez.
Drawing from the life of his paternal grandmother, Rosa Islas, Rivera Martinez explores an extraordinary story of resilience, identity and transformation. Rosa fled her community with her six young children, escaping abuse and oppression. Crossing valleys and mountains, she faced tremendous hardship during her three-week journey to Mexico City — a journey that would forever alter her life and echo across generations. Through movement, theatre, photography and documentary video, ROSA illuminates the power of the female body, its connection to the land, and its capacity to resist, survive and transform.
ROSA is co-presented by Curtain Razors, Making Treaty and New Dance Horizons as part of the Stream of Dance Festival, with support from Ondinnok and Globe Theatre.
This production of ROSA comes to Regina directly from a tour-de-force run of performances in Mexico City and marks Rivera Martinez’s return to Regina. Local audiences last saw his choreographic work in Making Treaty 4 at Globe Theatre in 2019. Rivera Martinez will also engage with local performing artists through a series of classes and workshops offered by New Dance Horizons and Curtain Razors in the coming weeks.
New Dance Horizons’ Stream of Dance Festival began Monday, April 27, with performances continuing Tuesday, April 28, at Darke Hall and Wednesday, April 29, at New Dance Horizons, 2207 Harvey Street. Featuring contemporary dance work from across Canada, the annual festival engages multiple arts venues throughout Regina. ROSA is the closing event in the festival.
Performances are scheduled for May 3 at 4:30 p.m. and May 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Globe Theatre Black Box. Each showing will run approximately 60 minutes and be followed by a talkback session with the artists.
Curtain Razors, founded in 1989, is known for supporting original Saskatchewan performance work that pushes the boundaries of theatre while fostering collaboration between artists and audiences.
