REGINA — This May, Saskatchewan recognizes the leadership of about 2,500, grade five to eight students during CAA School Safety Patrol Month, as proclaimed by the Ministry of Education.
“On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, we offer our sincere thanks to CAA for providing 75 years of dedicated service to the health and safety of Saskatchewan students,” Education Minister Everett Hindley said.
“We are proud to recognize May as CAA School Safety Patrol Month in honour of the patrollers who monitor our school zones, act as road-safety role models and help keep their friends and classmates safe throughout the year.”
The CAA School Safety Patrol program empowers student volunteers across Saskatchewan to promote safety in school zones and help fellow students get to school safely. Students like Alyssa Reeder at Gladys McDonald School in Regina, gain valuable skills such as confidence, time management, and teamwork.

“I really like helping the community and doing everything I can to make our school a safer place,” said Reeder.

“It was interesting to see the students that signed up, and how they flourished with their leadership skills.” said Lisa Kowalyshyn, principal at Gladys McDonald School.
As the program nears its 75th anniversary this fall (2026-2027 school year), its lasting impact continues to be felt beyond the crosswalk and into workplaces across Saskatchewan.

“Looking back, the thing that stuck with me the most was the sense of responsibility we were given at a young age,” said Megan Cox, CAA Saskatchewan accounts payable administrator, remembering her experience as a CAA School Safety Patroller.
That sense of commitment also resonated with Terri Oudot, now a CAA Saskatchewan insurance quality assurance and audit analyst.
“It didn’t matter what the weather was, we were out there…” recalled Oudot. Now working in insurance, she reflected on how her time as a CAA School Safety Patroller helped spark a lifelong passion for safety in her career. “Both jobs are about helping people. With safety patrollers you’re helping keep people safe, protecting them. With insurance, you’re trying to protect the most valuable things that clients have in their lives.”
To recognize patroller contributions, CAA provides thank you certificates and prizing to patrollers, with registered schools also receiving a small honourarium to celebrate their patrol teams. During CAA School Safety Patrol Month, CAA Saskatchewan is encouraging the public to slow down in school zones and thank patrollers for their service.
