REGINA — Two men are facing charges after separate high-speed motorcycle incidents in Regina, including one rider Air 1 observed travelling more than 200 km/h while weaving through traffic on Ring Road.
Group of motorcycles tracked by Air 1
The first incident occurred on May 1, around 7:45 p.m., when patrol officers near Albert Street and Gordon Road spotted a group of motorcycles travelling without licence plates. Police called in Air 1, which tracked the group from above.
At one point, Air 1 observed one of the motorcycles travelling about 100 km/h past Candy Cane Park – a 40 km/h zone that was filled with families and park-goers.
Air 1 continued to track the group and relay their location to officers on the ground. A canine unit officer eventually initiated a traffic stop on Lakeshore Drive, where the group pulled over. Investigators identified the driver responsible for the dangerous driving, and released the others.
Muhammad Rehan, 26, is charged with dangerous driving and breach of a conditional sentence order. His motorcycle was seized and impounded for 30 days.
According to court records, Rehan appeared in court on May 4 and 5 and was remanded in custody. A bail hearing is scheduled for May 8.
Air 1 clocks motorcycle going over 200 km/h
The second incident occurred on May 2, around 8:40 p.m., when officers in an unmarked police vehicle spotted another motorcycle without a license plate near Parliament Road and Albert Street. The driver, later identified as Evan Toth, 22, was travelling about 140 km/h down Albert Street.
Air 1 was again deployed and tracked the motorcycle from above. Patrol officers attempted a traffic stop near the Wascana Parkway exit on Ring Road, but Toth refused to pull over, say police. Instead, he accelerated onto Ring Road, where Air 1 observed him travelling well over 200 km/h and weaving through traffic.
Air 1 followed as Toth rode to the east end of the city before circling back toward Orchard Crescent and Dufferin Avenue. Several patrol units activated their emergency lights in an effort to stop him, but he continued, eventually leaving the city westbound on Highway 1. Moments later, he turned around and re-entered Regina.
The helicopter then observed him riding along walking paths before arriving at a home on Logan Crescent, say police. Officers on the ground moved in and arrested him without further incident. Officers moved in and arrested him without further incident.
Toth is charged with dangerous driving and flight from a peace officer. He is scheduled to appear in Regina Provincial Court on June 11.
