REGINA — A 29-year-old man is facing numerous charges after Regina police tracked a stolen vehicle through several neighbourhoods early Tuesday morning, and eventually arresting the suspect in a backyard.
According to police, at approximately 12:45 a.m. on May 5, police officers observed a vehicle being driven in a dangerous manner in the 1400 block of 14th Avenue. The vehicle had been reported stolen from a residence in the 1100 block of Montague Street on May 4. Officers initiated a traffic stop but the driver failed to comply and fled the area.
The vehicle continued through nearby streets and alleys, evading police while committing numerous traffic violations, including speeding, driving without headlights, entering oncoming lanes, crossing medians, travelling through parks and pedestrian pathways and failing to obey traffic lights and signs. Officers didn’t actively pursue the vehicle but, with the help of multiple units, were able to track it.
A Tire Deflation Device was successfully deployed near the 1800 block of Albert Street, and the vehicle eventually came to a stop. The male suspect fled on foot and was located a short time later hiding in the backyard of a residence in the 1800 block of Angus Street.
The suspect was arrested without further incident.
The 29-year-old man was charged with flight from police, impaired driving, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, driving while prohibited, failing to. Comply with conditions of an undertaking, dangerous driving, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
The man appeared in Regina Provincial Court on May 5.
