ESTEVAN — The Estevan Police Service saw call volumes decrease in April, but the overall service requests are still well above the 2025 pace.
According to numbers released at the May 5 meeting of the Estevan board of police commissioners, the EPS had 567 calls for service in April, down from 601 for the same month in 2025. Overall calls for service stood at 2,164 for the first four months of this year, compared to 1,958 through April 30, 2025.
Insp. Tyler McMillen noted the EPS handled five business break and enters last month, compared to none in April 2025.
“We have some groups, some young people that have been recently charged in those, and a couple are still under investigation, but there are suspects,” said McMillen.
Member-at-large and acting meeting chairwoman Roberta DeRosier wanted to know where the incidents were happening. McMillen noted the City of Estevan was a victim in a couple of incidents. One was solved, he said, and the same group is suspected in the other.
The EPS also had five residential break and enters, up from three in April 2025.
Overall, the EPS responded to 39 crimes against property in April, led by 20 thefts under $5,000, six wilful damage/mischief complaints, two thefts of a motor vehicle and one theft over $5,000. They had 37 thefts property crimes in April 2025.
For the year, the EPS has had 134 crimes against property, with 59 thefts under $5,000 and 32 wilful damage complaints accounting for the bulk of the activity. Members have also handled 13 residential break and enters, 10 business break and enters, 15 thefts of a motor vehicle, four thefts over $5,000, and one break and enter listed as other.
Some of the stolen vehicles have been recovered in Estevan and Regina, McMillen said.
For other calls, the EPS had 11 crimes against the person, with 10 assaults and one sexual crime.There were seven such incidents a year earlier.
For the first four months of the year, the EPS handled 34 assaults, 12 sexual crimes and four assaults causing bodily harm, for 50 crimes against the person. There were 43 such incidents in the first four months of 2025.
Police had one incident under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act in April for trafficking, compared with none in April 2025. Eight such incidents have occurred so far this year, with five for trafficking and three for possession. There were five in the first four months of 2025.
Eight charges were laid for Criminal Code traffic violations in April, with seven for impaired/exceed-related offences and one for impairment by drug. There were 11 for April 2025.
So far this year, the EPS has had 45 such driving incidents, with 30 for impairment/exceed-related offences, 13 for impairment by drug and two for dangerous drive and other. Twenty-nine such charges were laid in the first four months of 2025.
The five-year average is 2,137 calls for service, with 50 for crimes against the person, 111 for crimes against property, 38 for Criminal Code traffic violations and 13 under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
