The Saskatchewan Roughriders trimmed their roster ahead of main training camp, releasing eight players and moving five others to either the retired or injured list on Sunday.
Among the notable names released was American running back Peny Boone, the former Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year at Toledo. Boone joined Saskatchewan after a stint on the Toronto Argonauts practice roster and brought an impressive NCAA resume that included a 1,400-yard rushing season in 2023.
The Riders also parted ways with American defensive lineman Sundiata Anderson, who spent time with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2024. Anderson appeared in two preseason games with Seattle before being released during final roster cuts.
American receiver Collin Brunstein was another intriguing release after a record-setting collegiate career at Illinois College. Brunstein left school as the program’s all-time leader in receiving yards and touchdowns, while his 77 career touchdown catches stand as an NCAA all-divisions record.
In the secondary, the Roughriders released defensive backs D’Angelo Mandell and Austin McKinney. McKinney had turned heads during rookie camp earlier this week with an interception return touchdown during team drills.
Along the defensive line, Saskatchewan also released Kevin Orange Jr. and Nathan Pickering. Pickering previously spent training camp with Seattle after a productive five-year collegiate career at Mississippi State University.
American offensive lineman Dartanyan Tinsley was also among the cuts after previously signing with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2025.
In addition to the releases, the Roughriders moved kicker Alex Hale, offensive lineman Justin Osborne, defensive lineman Aaron Patrick and receiver Freddie Swain to the retired list. National linebacker Ryder Varga was moved to the six-game injured list.
