REGINA — A request for proposal (RFP) put out by the City of Regina is looking to improve a collision-prone intersection.
The city is procuring construction services to enhance traffic and safety at the intersection of Lewvan Drive and Dewdney Avenue.
“This project will address safety concerns, congestion and operational inefficiencies at a high-volume intersection,” notes the RFP.
Chris Warren, City of Regina director of roadways and transportation, said the intersection’s protected permissive left turn has contributed to an increased number of collisions.
“What that means is there's a portion of the north and southbound traffic that will have a turn left arrow, but then there's another portion that basically is now permissive, where people turning left have to yield for people going straight. And because of the higher speed here [and], because of the high traffic volumes, we do see several collisions as a result of that."
Kurtis Doney, deputy city manager of city operations, said the city is looking to create protected left-turning lanes at the intersection.
“[This will] reduce the risk of collision. When we look at how we reduce the impact on residents, there are many different things we can do, but it really starts in the design phase.”
Beyond adding new lanes, the project will also reconstruct sidewalks, add new traffic lights/signals and reconstruct underground infrastructure.
The work on is expected to start in late 2026 or early 2027, said Doney.
It’s unclear how long construction will last.
The RFP for the intersection improvements is open until May 26.
