ESTEVAN — The Estevan Police Service is looking forward to celebrating its 120th anniversary, and it hopes to invite the community for one of the bashes.
"A hundred and twenty years is a long time, and it’s a special year for us,” said Police Chief Jamie Blunden.
The EPS wants to have an open house and a barbecue at some point in the summer. It would be in addition to the Estevan Police Service’s involvement in the Doors Open effort on May 30, when the police station and other buildings in Estevan will be open for tours.
“The [May] 30th [event] is an initiative of the city,” said Blunden. “We want to be able to show people what we’re about here."
Blunden said an open house later in the year would be a chance to not only allow people to see what’s happening with the EPS, learn about their specialty units and possibly see the police dogs, but to learn about what happened in the past and the changes that have occurred.
“We have been looking at our archives, and I know that Constable [Danielle] Stephany [the community engagement officer] has been looking at some photos and trying to put a bit of a timeline together, so exactly what that’s going to look like and how it’s going to be presented have yet to be determined," said Blunden.
The EPS is also looking at rebranding efforts to create a new look in terms of consistency in the appearance of its logo, as well as modifications to its Facebook account.
With the hiring of Stephany as the new community engagement officer, other opportunities might present themselves to mark the 120th anniversary, Blunden said. Once the two new officers for the EPS graduate from the Saskatchewan Police College, Blunden said Stephany will move into the engagement role full-time.
