The La Ronge Ice Wolves are currently set to pick first overall in this year’s Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League draft, which the league announced Monday will take place June 9 at 1 p.m.
The league’s 11th draft will be live-streamed on the SJHL’s website and social media channels, and will include two rounds of selections of 2011-born players followed by six rounds of 2010-born players.
La Ronge, which recently parted ways with head coach and general manager Kevin Kaminski, has the top pick in the draft by virtue of finishing last overall this season with 11 wins in 56 games.
All eligible players must be Saskatchewan residents, previously undrafted, and not one of the auto-protected players from an SJHL centre chosen by the respective clubs.
The SJHL allows teams to auto-protect two local players per birth year from the under-15 age group ahead of the draft, exempting them from being selected by other clubs.
Teams can alternately protect three local players per birth year if they choose to forfeit a first-round U15 draft pick instead.
Teams are required to submit their lists of auto-protected players to the league by May 26. All unprotected players are then free to be drafted by any team in the province.
The full draft order will be released at later time.
