SWIFT CURRENT — An overdose alert has been issued for Swift Current and the surrounding area.
The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health issued a high-risk alert after a street drug sold as MDMA (ecstasy) tested negative for MDMA.
Drug screening instead found the substance contained cocaine and methamphetamine. The presence of fentanyl or other substances is suspected but has not been confirmed.
Multiple overdoses were reported May 21, with naloxone administered in each case. All cases required medical intervention.
The alert remains in effect until May 28.
The Ministry of Health is reminding the public to call 911 immediately if an overdose is suspected. It also noted the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act provides legal protection for those who seek emergency help during an overdose.
