ESTEVAN — Members of the Estevan/Carnduff RCMP detachment have been busier than last year, thanks to a bump in traffic-related infractions.
According to an email from the Saskatchewan RCMP sent to SaskToday, as of the end of March, the Carnduff RCMP’s detachment area has seen a 26 per cent increase in files and the Estevan RCMP has seen a 14 per cent increase in files. Exact numbers for the first three months of 2025 and 2026 were not provided.
The email states provincial traffic enforcement, such as speeding and impaired driving offences, account for some of the most common calls and proactive work for Estevan/Carnduff RCMP members. For instance, the Estevan-Carnduff RCMP reported 394 provincial traffic files in March, the vast majority of which were for speeding.
“As summer approaches, Estevan-Carnduff RCMP will continue to prioritize road safety. Officers ask drivers that no matter where they are headed, whether it be to the lake, a grad celebration or a summer vacation, please make safe driving decisions behind the wheel,” the RCMP said.
“Remember that if you or guests will be consuming products which result in impairment, such as alcohol or cannabis, have a designated driver assigned. If no safe ride is available, stay the night and drive only when sober.”
Officers also remind drivers that unsafe driving behaviour extends beyond impairment. Wearing a seatbelt and avoiding distracted driving are an essential piece in all travellers reaching their destinations safely.
Another prominent trend the Estevan/Carnduff RCMP has noticed is a decrease in property crimes. In the first quarter of 2026, property crime is down 30 per cent year over year, which the RCMP said includes 69 per cent fewer break and enters. Violent crime has also seen a decrease during this same time period.
“Whether it be related to road safety or combating crime, Estevan/Carnduff RCMP asks their community members to partner with them,” the RCMP said. “If you see suspicious activity – whether it be a suspicious person, behaviour or vehicle – please report it to police. When communities are diligent in their reporting, officers are able to get a clearer picture of what is happening in the area, helping them keep their communities safe.”
The Estevan/Carnduff RCMP reminds the public that information about a crime, or a potential crime, can be reported to police by calling 310-7267.
