REGINA — Residents are being encouraged to “branch out” this Friday as Wascana Centre celebrates Arbor Day with a free tree giveaway aimed at strengthening Regina’s urban forest.
The Provincial Capital Commission will begin distributing young trees at 3:30 p.m. on May 29 in the Willow Island parking lot, offering residents a chance to take home one sapling per person while supplies last.
The giveaway includes two prairie-adapted species, Villosa Lilac and Scots Pine, both selected for their long-term benefits in Saskatchewan’s climate.
Villosa Lilac is known for its seasonal blooms and its ability to attract pollinators, supporting bees and other beneficial insects. Scots Pine is widely used as a durable windbreak species, valued for its resilience against strong prairie winds and suitability for larger yards and acreages.
Organizers say both options play an important role in helping residents “put down roots” in a practical and environmentally meaningful way.
The event also highlights the broader significance of Arbor Day, a global observance that encourages tree planting and care. Established in 1872, Arbor Day has grown into an international environmental initiative focused on forest conservation, climate resilience, and expanding green spaces in communities.
In Regina, trees within Wascana Centre are part of a carefully managed urban forest. The Provincial Capital Commission is responsible for maintaining tree canopy health across Wascana Centre and surrounding Government House grounds, with ongoing monitoring to support long-term sustainability.
Urban forestry research consistently shows that trees provide measurable benefits in cities, including improved air quality, reduced heat, stormwater management, wildlife habitat, and increased access to natural spaces that support mental well-being.
Officials say the Arbor Day initiative is part of that broader effort to keep Regina growing in a sustainable direction while encouraging residents to take an active role in shaping their environment.
Trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of one per person.
