REGINA — Andrew Reed has been farming for over 50 years now in the Zehner area, northeast of Regina.
The Andrew Cattle Company, a third-generation operation, hosted the spring wrap-up for the 620 CKRM Country Cookout on Thursday, featuring music, stories and a few surprise guests from the Saskatchewan Roughriders. It wasn’t the first time Reed’s farm hosted the event, having previously been honoured during the country cookout in 1995.
Reed’s family began farming in the 1950’s with his grandfather in Craven.
“My grandpa's homestead is north of Craven, my dad moved down in this area in 1950, and then myself and now my son is here [in this area]. This is my 54th crop,” he said.
For the Andrew Cattle Company, it operates as a mixed-use farm.
“We farm grain land and we run a cow-calf operation and my son also has a purebred Simmental herd.”
For seeding, the company plants different types of lentils, canola and durum wheat.
Reed said they’re currently cropping canola and will wrap-up the durum soon as they had to deal with early challenging conditions.
“We fought through a lot of wet weather, we did a lot of seeding and conditions that were quite wet but our land is pretty good that way as long as we can get over the fields it doesn't cause us too much trouble.”
This early wet weather caused a one-week delay in seeding.
As for calving, the farm wrapped up the work in mid-March.
The 620 CKRM Country Cookout will return again starting in the fall.
