REGINA — Use of force from the Regina Police Service has been increasing.
A report from Tuesday’s board of police commissioners meeting shows a 27 per cent increase in use of force between 2024 and 2025. Last year saw 341 cases of use of force compared to 264 in 2024.
The RPS has outlined the highest scenarios where the use of force was required:
- Soft physical control (takedown with injury): 68 cases;
- Canine deployment with injury: 43 cases;
- Physical strike causing injury or complaint of injury: 38 cases;
- Firearm pointed: 33 cases;
- Tactical team deployment: 23 cases.
The RPS also broke down the levels of use of force.
Level 1 means use of force was appropriate and compliant with policies.
Level 2 is an appropriate use of force, but did not comply with all policies.
Level 3 is an inappropriate use of force, but no charges were laid.
Last year saw 316 Level 1 cases, 22 Level 2 cases, and three Level 3 cases.
There were no reports of Level 4 cases, which would see criminal charges laid against police.
Despite the increase, the RPS said use of force made up under one per cent of their total calls for service.
