REGINA — A preliminary hearing has been set for a Regina Provincial Correctional Centre (RPCC) employee accused of smuggling drugs into the jail.
The hearing for Justin Amyotte is scheduled for October in Regina Provincial Court. It will determine if there is enough evidence for him to stand trial on charges of conspiracy to traffic a controlled substance, breach of trust by a public officer, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
He is charged with conspiracy to traffic a controlled substance, breach of trust by a public officer, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
According to RCMP, their investigation started in September 2023 after White Butte RCMP received information about drugs being smuggled into the jail. At the time, a 36-year-old inmate was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and conspiracy. Investigators later identified a 35-year-old woman, believed to be an outside accomplice, who was helping procure and package drugs intended for an RPCC employee.
After executing multiple judicial authorizations, White Butte RCMP say they determined that Amyotte, a correctional officer, was involved in the smuggling operation.
