ESTEVAN — Two people have been arrested and charged following an incident in Estevan early on June 5.
According to the Estevan Police Service (EPS) report, members responded to a report of a man carrying an axe and a baseball bat while walking toward a residence in east Estevan. The EPS said the man was loudly uttering threats to harm another individual. Officers attended and located the suspect carrying these items, along with a can of bear spray. On contact with police, the EPS said he appeared to have a significant amount of blood on his arm.
The EPS noted he was compliant with officers’ commands to drop the weapons and was arrested without incident for possession of weapons dangerous to the public.
An investigation determined that the blood on his arm was the result of a laceration received during an altercation with another man earlier that day. The EPS said members later located and arrested the second man involved.
As a result of the investigation, a 25-year-old man and a 28-year old man, both of Estevan, were charged with assault with a weapon and possession of weapons dangerous to the public, respectively. The EPS said both individuals were believed to be under the influence of drugs at the time of their arrest and were lodged in cells to be released on conditions once sober.
That same day, police responded to a report of a 23-year-old man who was unresponsive and believed to be suffering from a drug overdose at a trailer court. Upon arrival, the EPS said officers located the man and immediately administered several doses of naloxone and commenced CPR. Estevan EMS attended a short time later and the male was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital for further assessment and treatment.
Members were called about a man chasing a woman in the downtown area. The EPS said she was able to evade the man with the assistance of bystanders who helped bring her to the police station for her safety. The suspect was subsequently located, arrested by police and charged with several breaches of his pre-existing release conditions related to curfew and consumption of illicit drugs. He was lodged in cells until sober.
A complaint came in of a man trespassing on a property in the Westview area. The EPS said members attended and located an individual at the scene. He said he was there to pick up some property. The man was cautioned not to return to the property and sent on his way.
A complaint of a suspicious man knocking on windows at a city centre motel was investigated and determined to be a man who is known to police. The EPS reported he was attempting to contact a friend. The man was cautioned about his behaviour and sent on his way.
A traffic stop during the early morning hours resulted in a driver providing a breath sample into a roadside screening device with a result of “warn.” The EPS said the vehicle was impounded and the man was provided a ride to his residence.
Reports from June 6 and 7 to follow.
