WEYBURN — A motorcycle theft and a dangerous driving incident were among the 97 calls for service for the Weyburn Police Service (WPS) from May 31-June 7.
The WPS said it received a report June 1 of a stolen, three-wheeled specialty motorcycle from a storage facility. Through investigation and with assistance from members of the public, officers located the motorcycle in Midale.
According to the WPS, a man was subsequently arrested in Weyburn and held in custody. He is scheduled to appear in Weyburn Provincial Court on June 9. A woman was also arrested and charged as a co-accused. She was later released on conditions pending a future court appearance.
In other recent WPS news, an officer on patrol observed a vehicle travelling at a very high rate of speed June 6. The WPS said the driver was known to police and was prohibited from operating a motor vehicle.
The vehicle was observed travelling approximately 100 kilometres per hour within the city. It was also driving on the shoulder of the road, striking curbs, and disregarding traffic control devices. Due to the significant amount of traffic in the area, the WPS said officers did not pursue the vehicle.
Police quickly located the suspect vehicle parked on a nearby street and safely contained it. The WPS said the driver initially refused to exit the vehicle, requiring officers to break a passenger-side window before he surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.
The man was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Weyburn Provincial Court on June 11 for a bail hearing. Charges include dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, taking a motor vehicle without consent, breaching conditions of a release order and driving while suspended.
In other recent police news, on June 2, police responded to a report of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance at a residence. The WPS said he was arrested without incident and lodged in police cells.
While in custody, the WPS monitoring system alerted officers to a potential medical concern. EMS attended and assessed the man, who was subsequently transported to hospital for further medical treatment.
The WPS said it utilizes biometric monitoring technology within the cell block to help ensure the safety and well-being of individuals in police custody.
The WPS also shared details on its activity level during the recent Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Show. The WPS said it reported to very few issues throughout the event. One man was arrested for public intoxication and was held in cells until sober.
Officers also responded to several driving and parking complaints during the activities. Overall, the WPS said the event was a success, and the WPS thanks attendees for their co-operation and responsible behaviour.
“It was encouraging to see so many individuals utilizing designated drivers and transportation services to ensure everyone arrived home safely,” the WPS said in a news release.
On June 6, the WPS received multiple Report Impaired Driver (RID) line complaints regarding a motorist. Officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Investigation determined the man driving was impaired by alcohol. He was arrested and later provided two breath samples, both of which the WPS said registering nearly twice the legal limit.
