LLOYDMINSTER — Update: The preliminary hearing for Madison Paddy-Jimmy wrapped up in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Tuesday and she has been committed to stand trial. A trial date will be set at a later date.
Original story: A preliminary hearing is underway to determine whether 25-year-old Madison Paddy-Jimmy should stand trial on a second-degree murder charge.
Paddy-Jimmy, from Thunderchild First Nation, is accused of killing Tonio Cantell, 28, of Big Island Lake First Nation in November 2025.
A publication ban prohibits the disclosure of any evidence presented during the hearing, in order to protect the integrity of a potential trial.
Cantell was one of three men found dead at a rural property near Turtleford on Nov. 5, 2025. Officers from Turtleford RCMP found the three men with serious injuries and attempted life-saving measures, but EMS who attended the scene declared all three men dead.
Paddy-Jimmy was arrested in Turtleford later that day. RCMP have not released the names of the other two victims, and Paddy-Jimmy is currently charged only with Cantell’s death.
