BEARDYS AND OKEMASIS CREE NATION – Saskatchewan RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit have charged a woman following a child’s death
Saskatchewan RCMP’s Saskatoon Serious Crimes Unit (SCU) have charged a woman following the death of a child on Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation.
On May 10, Rosthern RCMP responded to a report of a child in medical distress at a residence on Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation. EMS attended and declared the child, who was under the age of 12, dead at the scene.
Further investigation and consultation with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service determined the child’s death was suspicious in nature. Saskatchewan RCMP’s Saskatoon SCU took charge of the investigation.
Saskatchewan RCMP officers arrested a 67-year-old woman on Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation on June 10. She is charged with:
- one count, manslaughter;
- one count, criminal negligence causing death;
- one count, failure to provide necessaries of life; and
- one count, abandoning a child.
Police say they are not releasing the name of the child or the accused in the event a publication ban is ordered, and to protect the identity of the child. Police will not be providing additional information that may lead to the identification of the child.
The 67-year-old woman made her first appearance in Saskatoon Provincial Court on June 11. She is scheduled to make her next appearance in court in Rosthern on June 17.
Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Team, Saskatoon Warrant Enforcement and Suppression Team, and Prince Albert and Battlefords Serious Crimes Units assisted with this investigation.
