ESTEVAN — A southeast Saskatchewan man is facing 10 charges after the Saskatchewan RCMP seized five firearms and a suspected explosive device during a weapons investigation.
According to a news release from the Saskatchewan RCMP, the Carnduff/Estevan RCMP received a report from the Estevan Police Service that a man in the RCMP's jurisdiction was in possession of a stolen prohibited firearm.
The RCMP said the detachment began an investigation and engaged the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Saskatchewan Trafficking Response Team (STRT), based out of Yorkton, and the Critical Incident Response Team to assist. Officers obtained a search warrant and executed it at a rural residence in the RM of Estevan on June 8.
During a search of the residence, officers located and seized four firearms and ammunition, the RCMP said. They also located a handheld item that officers believed could be an explosive device. The Saskatchewan RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was engaged to attend the scene to safely evaluate and remove the device. Through investigation, The Saskatchewan RCMP’s EDU determined the item was an empty casing and did not consist of explosive materials.
A man was arrested at the residence.
As a result of the continued investigation, the Saskatchewan RCMP said it also seized a prohibited firearm at a residence in Frobisher. An investigation determined the firearm, which was previously reported as stolen in Estevan, was illegally sold.
Jared Brailean, age 23, from Hitchcock is charged with four counts each of unsafe storage of firearms, and possession of a firearm knowing possession was unauthorized, and one count each of weapons trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime less than $5,000.
Brailean appeared in Estevan Provincial Court on June 11. According to information from the court house, he was remanded into custody and is scheduled to have a show-cause hearing June 23 in Estevan.
