SASKATOON — Saskatoon police have identified the man who went missing after his jet ski went over the weir on the South Saskatchewan River as 32-year-old Adan Vargas Salvador, a visitor from Mexico.
Police say they received multiple 911 calls around 4:45 p.m. on June 20, reporting a jet ski rider in distress near the weir at 33rd Street East and Spadina Crescent. water rescue crews responded utilizing a specialized vessel designed for weir rescue operations. Members of the Saskatoon Police Service Aerial Support Unit, Forensic Identification Section, Missing Person Unit, and Tactical Support Unit also assisted Saskatoon Fire in the response. Aerial drones, a fixed wing aircraft, and watercraft were used to search the river and riverbanks for the operator.
Police say his family have requested that his photograph and name be released.
Investigators with the Saskatoon Police Service are in contact with family, and the search for Adan Salvador’s body continues along the South Saskatchewan River.
The Saskatoon Police Service and Saskatoon Fire Department are reminding residents of the dangers on and around the river. Given current increased water levels and speed, river conditions are constantly changing and could have additional hazards, say police.
“We would like to remind the public that the weir must never be approached and should only be viewed from designated areas along Spadina Crescent East,” said Saskatoon police.
