REGINA — It’s common for items to be left behind at Regina’s Airport.
In fact, it happens more than you may think.
“Our reports for the last couple of years show between 1,000 and 1,500 items left behind,” said Kyla Antonini, manager of customer experience and marketing, Regina Airport Authority.
Antonini said they’re common items left behind that airport staff find.
“Wallets, pieces of clothing, books, kids' toys, those are easily lost, and passports too.
"Our security team is always looking for items that are unattended, right? It's a security protocol, so they see items pretty quickly, lost, left, unattended.”
Procedure
For most items, once they’re found, the Regina Airport will log each item.
“Everything that is found is logged online. And in a system that they can look at and put in, I found this and see if they've got a match, and then they have some storage where everything is kept from when it is found,” said Antonini.
The airport then holds items for 180 days, noted Antonini.
“So, 180 days gives that person enough time to remember that they might have lost it at the airport, come back for it, but also not too much that we have to rent out storage space for lost impact.”
While most items are left at the airport, passports found are sent away.
“Passports are ones that we pass off to CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency). So if you have lost your passport, you're not going to find it at the airport. You're going to have to contact Canadian Border Services.”
Antonini also said items left behind on a plane arriving or departing from the airport will be handled by the airlines.
“So if you lose an item on a plane, you need to contact your airline.”
In the event an item isn’t picked up at the airport within 180 days, different procedures will occur.
“They're either disposed of, donated, or transferred,” said Antonini.
The airport will donate items, including clothes, books, toys, etc.
