REGINA — Sask Polytech Media Production grads can earn a diploma and a degree in four years
Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the University of Regina signed a new transfer credit agreement that creates a new pathway for students pursuing careers in film production.
Graduates of Sask. Polytech's Media Production diploma program can now ladder into a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Film Production at the U of R with up to 60 credit hours, equivalent to two years, recognized towards a four-year degree.
“With film production activity increasing across the province, there’s a growing demand for skilled, creative professionals,” says Kristen Craig dean of Sask Polytech’s School of Creative Media, Arts and Sciences. "Our diploma provides a strong technical foundation through hands-on production experience. Laddering into a BFA builds on that while expanding our graduates’ creative and critical voice.”
“This partnership is an important step in expanding access to film education and supporting the next generation of creators in Saskatchewan. It prepares graduates for a wider range of roles, strengthening their long-term career opportunities in the screen industry as well as in a variety of other professional fields,” says Dr. David Dick, Dean of Media, Art, and Performance at the University of Regina.
Graduates who complete the Sask Polytech Media Production diploma on or after June 1, 2025, with a minimum 60 per cent average are eligible for up to 60 transfer credits toward the U of R’s BFA in Film Production. The agreement took effect January 1, 2026 and will remain in place for five years.
The partnership opens new opportunities for media production graduates to continue their education. By building on the hands-on skills and industry experience gained through the diploma, students can earn both a diploma and a degree while reducing the time and cost required to complete their studies. Together, the institutions are supporting student success and helping graduates advance more quickly into careers in Saskatchewan’s film and media industry.
