WEYBURN — The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) has announced charges in connection with an assault incident earlier this year.
According to the WPS, the incident occurred outside a licensed establishment in Weyburn. Through the investigation, officers identified a suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. A 45-year-old Manitoba man was subsequently arrested in Churchill, Man., and charged with assault with a weapon.
He was transported back to Weyburn and was remanded into custody. He appeared in Estevan Provincial Court on July 6.
In other recent police news, in the early morning hours of June 29, police were called to the Weyburn Exhibition grounds for a report of a recently-terminated employee causing a disturbance and refusing to leave the premises.
The individual had left the area prior to police arriving but due to concerns that he may return, officers deployed the WPS drone to assist in locating him. He was quickly found and the WPS said he was heavily intoxicated. The man was arrested for being drunk in public and lodged in police cells until sober.
"Alcohol was a significant factor in this incident," the WPS said.
Throughout the week, the WPS received reports of bicycles being stolen from residential properties. In one incident, the WPS said a man was arrested and charged with possession of property obtained by crime. The bicycle was returned to its owner. In several other occurrences, stolen bicycles were later recovered after being abandoned at different locations within the city.
Bike thefts are often crimes of opportunity, the WPS said. Residents are encouraged to secure bicycles with quality locks and avoid leaving them unattended in open areas. Home security cameras and prompt public reporting have assisted police in recovering stolen property and identifying suspects.
On July 2, police received a Report Impaired Drivers (RID) line complaint regarding a possible impaired motorist leaving a local medical facility. Officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Following an investigation, a man was determined to be impaired by alcohol. He was charged accordingly and later released with a future court date.
On July 5, police received a report of an assault that occurred outside the beer gardens at the Weyburn Exhibition grounds.
The WPS said an investigation determined that several individuals attempted to leave the beer gardens with open liquor. When security personnel directed them to return the alcohol inside, a confrontation ensued, resulting in a security guard being struck in the face. A man was later identified, located and charged in connection with the incident. The WPS said alcohol was a contributing factor.
WPS members had 108 calls for service from June 28-July 5.
