SASKATOON — A man whose manslaughter and unlawful confinement charges were stayed has been sentenced to almost four years in prison on weapons and drug charges.
Thomas Richard Sutherland, 46, pleaded guilty in Saskatoon Provincial Court on June 9 to the lesser charge of possession of fentanyl, and two weapons charges related to a loaded prohibited handgun. He was initially charged with possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking, along with six weapons offences related to the handgun.
The manslaughter and unlawful confinement charges against Sutherland, which were laid in connection with Megan Gallagher’s death, were stayed in mid-March 2025 ahead of his scheduled April 2025 trial. Those charges can no longer be revived, as more than one year has passed since they were stayed.
Sutherland was already in custody at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre on unrelated matters when he was charged in September 2022 in connection with Gallagher’s death.
