ONION LAKE CREE NATION — Saskatchewan Ministry of Health has issued an overdose alert after multiple overdoses and two suspected overdose-related deaths were reported in Onion Lake Cree Nation.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority and Onion Lake Emergency Medical Services reported the overdoses and deaths between July 1 and 8. In several cases, emergency medical treatment was required, and one case required emergency department intensive care.
Naloxone was administered with varying results. Health officials say the overdoses and fatalities indicate a higher risk of overdose and death from drugs in Onion Lake Cree Nation and the surrounding area.
According to the alert, the substance was described in some cases as brownish in colour and in a black bag. It was sold as “down” or fentanyl and may contain fentanyl or unknown opioids.
In all reported cases, the substance was smoked.
Health officials say naloxone will counter the effects of opioids, but not other substances. Multiple doses of naloxone may be required.
The Ministry of Health says use of illegally acquired drugs poses health risks, including overdose and death. Some risks can be reduced, but not eliminated.
Anyone who sees someone overdosing should call 911 immediately. People are also encouraged to get a Take Home Naloxone Kit by calling HealthLine 811 to find locations.
People using drugs alone can call the National Overdose Response Service at 1-888-688-NORS (6677).
The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act protects individuals who seek emergency help during an overdose or who witness an overdose.
Information on where to access drug checking supplies and services is available at saskatchewan.ca/overdose.
Residents are encouraged to share the alert, post the alert poster and sign up for Sask Drug Alert by texting JOIN to 1-833-35-B-SAFE (352-7233).
The alert is in effect until July 16.
