WEYBURN — The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) is praising members for rescuing a resident from a house fire on Fifth Street.
According to the Weyburn Police Service, members received reports July 17 that a residence was fully engulfed in flames. A person was reportedly still inside the home.
Officers immediately assessed the situation and attempted to enter, despite what the WPS called "extremely hazardous conditions". Working alongside several community members who were already on scene attempting to help, the WPS said officers entered the smoke-filled residence and located the occupant approximately 15 feet inside the entrance.
According to the WPS, the victim was successfully removed from the residence and brought to EMS personnel for emergency medical treatment before being transported to hospital.
"The Weyburn Police Service would also like to recognize the actions of the community members who assisted during the rescue," the WPS said in a news release. "Their willingness to act in a dangerous and rapidly evolving situation contributed significantly to the successful removal of the occupant from the residence."
The WPS also thanked the Weyburn RCMP for their assistance with traffic control during the incident.
"In addition, emergency communications personnel played a critical role in co-ordinating the response and ensuring that responding emergency services received timely information and support throughout the incident.
"The Weyburn Police Service is extremely proud of the professionalism, courage and teamwork demonstrated by everyone involved. The actions taken by first responders and assisting citizens reflect the strong community spirit that exists in Weyburn and the commitment of those who put themselves at risk to help others in need."
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, the WPS said. The WPS added the Weyburn Fire Department would provide further information regarding the fire response once the scene has been cleared and additional details become available.
SaskToday will have updates as they become available.
