The Saskatchewan Roughriders are mourning the loss of linebacker and team captain Jayden Dalke.
The club announced Sunday that Dalke died following a car accident Saturday evening. He was 30. The Riders were supposed to return to the field Sunday following a bye week but cancelled practice.
"It is with profound sadness that the Saskatchewan Roughriders mourn the loss of linebacker and team captain Jayden Dalke, who passed away in a car accident yesterday evening," the team said in a statement.
"A relentless warrior on the field, Jayden's determination, toughness and work ethic inspired his teammates, who cared deeply for him and are heartbroken by his passing.
"Jayden had a unique gift of making the people around him feel special and valued. No one ever left a conversation with him without a smile. On and off the field, he was the true definition of what it means to be a Saskatchewan Roughrider.
"Our hearts go out to the entire Dalke family, who travelled the country to watch Jayden live his dream. We will miss him terribly and will never forget the impact he had on our lives and our team."
Dalke was in his fifth season with Saskatchewan after being selected by the club in the sixth round, 54th overall, of the 2022 CFL Draft.
The Leduc, Alta., product quickly established himself as one of the league's top Canadian linebackers and a respected leader inside the Roughriders' locker room. He appeared in all 18 regular-season games during his rookie campaign before taking on a larger defensive role over the next two seasons.
In 2023, Dalke recorded 41 defensive tackles, one interception and two forced fumbles in 14 games. His first CFL interception came in Saskatchewan's season-opening victory over the Edmonton Elks.
He followed that with another productive campaign in 2024, registering 10 defensive tackles, four special teams tackles, one sack and one forced fumble in 16 games before signing a contract extension later that year.
Dalke was also a member of Saskatchewan's Grey Cup championship team in 2025, recovering a fumble during the regular season while continuing to play a key role on special teams and defence.
His 2026 season was limited by injury. Dalke suffered an arm injury in the Roughriders' season opener against the B.C. Lions and was sidelined for several weeks before returning to the lineup for Saskatchewan's July 12 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Before turning professional, Dalke starred at the University of Alberta, where he earned Canada West First-Team All-Star honours twice and was named a U Sports Second-Team All-Canadian in 2021. He also spent four seasons with the Edmonton Wildcats of the Prairie Football Conference, compiling 165 defensive tackles over 32 Canadian Junior Football League games.
Dalke's impact extended far beyond the football field.
Remembered by teammates, coaches and staff for his relentless competitiveness, infectious personality and genuine care for those around him, Dalke became one of the most respected figures in the Roughriders organization during his five seasons in green and white.
He leaves behind his family, friends, teammates and countless members of Rider Nation who watched him grow from a sixth-round draft pick into a Grey Cup champion, team captain and one of the leaders of Saskatchewan's locker room.
