WEYBURN — The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) has announced charges against two people following a drug bust in the city on July 17.
In a news release, the WPS said its Criminal Investigation and Drug Enforcement Unit – with the assistance of the Weyburn Police Service Patrol Section, the Winnipeg Police Service and the Canada Border Services Agency – has concluded an investigation into the importation and trafficking of opium.
According to the WPS, on July 17, investigators arrested a 30-year-old Weyburn man and a 50-year-old man from the United Kingdom. During the investigation, search warrants were executed at a residence and a hotel room in Weyburn.
As a result of those searches, the WPS said police seized approximately 4.3 kilograms of suspected opium, approximately $4,000 in Canadian currency, and additional evidence believed to be related to the importation and trafficking of controlled substances.
The WPS said Gurmukh Singh of Weyburn has been charged with possession of opium for the purpose of trafficking; trafficking opium; importing opium; possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; smuggling; and false declaration of goods.
Surinder Singh Sanghera of the U.K. has been charged with possession of opium for the purpose of trafficking; trafficking opium; and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
Both accused were remanded into custody and each made their first appearance in Estevan Provincial Court on July 20. They are scheduled to appear in Weyburn Provincial Court on July 23.
"This investigation highlights the strong collaborative efforts between municipal, federal and partner law enforcement agencies in disrupting the importation and trafficking of illicit drugs into our communities," the WPS said in a news release.
