The Western Canadian Baseball League record book has another new entry.
Just days after Swift Current 57’s slugger Jake Hiromoto set new single-season records for home runs and RBIs, Moose Jaw Miller Express speedster Thomas Soto became the league's all-time single-season stolen base leader.
Soto swiped his record-breaking 43rd base during Moose Jaw's 8-2 victory over the Swift Current 57's on Tuesday night. The Miller Express infielder finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and added three stolen bases in the win, while Michael Rago and Caden Ransom both homered.
The victory, coupled with Saskatoon's 9-7 extra-inning loss to the Medicine Hat Mavericks, gives Moose Jaw a two-game cushion atop the East Division standings.
Medicine Hat rallied from deficits of 5-2 and 7-5 before scoring twice in the 10th inning to earn the victory at Cairns Field. Johnny Vulcano and Eric Calder had two hits each for the Mavericks while Nick Cote had three hits and Josh Henson drove in three runs for the Berries, who were undone by seven errors. The win moves Medicine Hat one game ahead of the Weyburn Beavers for the fourth and final playoff spot in the East.
Meanwhile, the Regina Red Sox swept a doubleheader from the Energy City Cactus Rats by scores of 2-1 and 6-2 in Spruce Grove.
Kaegan Baker tossed a complete game in the opener, allowing one run over seven innings, while Ian Montz provided the offence with a two-run homer. In game two, Carson Cox doubled, homered and drove in four runs as Regina erased an early two-run deficit.
Elsewhere, the Sylvan Lake Gulls enjoyed a big day at the plate, sweeping a doubleheader by outscoring their opponents 31-6. The Gulls defeated the Lethbridge Bulls 15-4 before routing the Brooks Bombers 16-2.
