ESTEVAN — Projects in southeast Saskatchewan have received support from the Provincial Traffic Safety Fund's latest round of grants.
According to a provincial news release issued July 30, the City of Estevan received $56,209 for what was described as Estevan fire hall traffic control lights. No other details were immediately available.
Other southeast projects to receive support include the RM of Benson, $7,700 for a speed awareness project on Township Road 60; the RM of Brock $4,043 for a speed awareness project on Range Road 2044; and the town of Redvers, $48,354 for what was listed as a Warren Street traffic safety enhancement initiative.
Sixty-seven projects in Saskatchewan communities will receive grants totalling $1,679,635, the government said. Grants range from $1,079 to $100,000.
Provincial Traffic Safety Fund grants are awarded to communities twice a year, using proceeds from photo speed enforcement. According to a news release, a total of $18.4 million has been awarded for 1,065 projects in Saskatchewan since the program was established in 2019.
Eligible projects must focus on at least one of these traffic safety priorities: speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, occupant protection, intersection safety, aggressive driving, vulnerable road users or medically-at-risk drivers.
Applications are reviewed by a committee made up of representatives from the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association, the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, the Prince Albert Grand Council, the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Highways and SGI.
Applications are now being accepted for the next round of funding. The deadline for applications is Sept. 30. For more information visit SGI's website.
