EDMONTON – The second half of the CFL game between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Edmonton Elks was delayed 81 minutes due to lightning in the vicinity of Commonwealth Stadium.
Lightning strikes were visible in the Edmonton sky at halftime.
The teams returned to the field at 7:30 Mountain/Saskatchewan time for a 10-minute warmup. The game resumed at 7:40.
“I didn’t love the lightning delay,” Riders quarterback Trevor Harris said, “but it is what it is. It’s part of the game.”
The Riders led the Elks 14-13 at the break. Quarterback Tommy Stevens had both touchdowns before the lengthy delay.
Stevens added another major and KeeSean Johnson also found the end zone in a 28-26 victory for Saskatchewan.
“There were schemes and things we were able to look at at halftime,” Riders coach Corey Mace said. “The more time we had just allowed us to do more coaching.”
