REGINA — With affordability top of mind for many Regina residents, how much income is needed to live comfortably?
A report from Remitly says Regina residents need an annual income of nearly $156,000 for a “level of happiness” in the city.
The figures were based on a study from Purdue University that examined the relationship between income and happiness, identifying the point at which higher earnings no longer significantly improve overall well-being, life satisfaction or emotional health.
Remitly took the numbers from Purdue University and adjusted local numbers to account for inflation and purchasing power.
Among 19 Canadian cities, Regina ranks ninth for the annual income required to reach the threshold of happiness.
Victoria ranks as the top Canadian city requiring the highest amount of income for happiness at $169,951, followed by Vancouver and Toronto both at $166,982.
Saskatchewan’s other major city, Saskatoon, ranks fourth at $159,808.
Notably, Kingston ranked 19th in the ranking at $140,513 despite being the most expensive Canadian city to rent in.
Despite ranking in the middle of the pack, Regina's annual income for happiness is roughly $45,000 more than the average for Canada.
