DILLON — All charges against two Calgary men accused of drug trafficking and weapons offences were stayed in Buffalo River Dene Nation Circuit Court in July.
Deng Deng and Kuol Kuol were arrested on Dec. 4, 2025, after Dillon RCMP, assisted by Saskatchewan RCMP’s Meadow Lake Crime Reduction Team, executed a search warrant at a home on Buffalo River Dene Nation. Police seized approximately 484 grams of cocaine, a large sum of cash, a loaded handgun with the serial number removed, and a rifle.
Both men faced eight weapons-related charges, as well as possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and possession for the purpose of trafficking. Deng was also charged with possession of a weapon contrary to a court order. Kuol faced four counts of failing to comply with release conditions and one count of obstructing a peace officer.
In a phone interview Friday, the prosecutor said decisions to stay proceedings follow the Crown’s public policy on the decision to prosecute, which involves a legal test. That test requires prosecutors to always assess during the life of a file whether there remains a reasonable prospect of conviction and whether prosecution is in the public interest. When either of those criteria are not met, the prosecution can’t proceed, so the Crown must enter a stay of proceedings.
She said that was the decision made and she couldn't say more.
When the Crown stays charges, the charges are put on hold. They can be revived within one year, meaning the person could still be prosecuted on the same charges, but this rarely happens.
