If Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris had his way, the fact he crossed the 40,000 yards career passing mark on Friday night would have just been taken in stride like any other football moment.
The 14-year CFL veteran essentially admitted as much during postgame media duties after the Green and White took a 42-20 win over the Ottawa Redblacks at Mosaic Stadium, saying that if not for coach Corey Mace and his emphatic dressing room presentation, he just might have tried to brush it off.
And that’s Trevor Harris in a nutshell, says Mace — a consummate team player who looks to pass the credit around rather than focus on himself.
Even as he becomes a CFL legend.
Mace told reporters about how he presented Harris with the offensive game ball after the victory in honour of his milestone, and he promptly tried to hand it off to another player.
“I said ‘no buddy, that’s your ball, you can pick another one to give to someone else’,” Mace said with an almost incredulous tone.
“That’s Trevor, though, he’s never going to be the ‘me’ guy or accept it. He’s always going to deflect and it’s not a show, that’s really who he is, which is a huge part of why you love him.”

“I’m not usually into the number things, but what Mace did that after the game and said there’s only been 12 to do it, for me to just brush it off would be rude. For him to do that is awesome,” Harris said.
“To be able to do that on a professional level is something that just blows my mind, but again, I just try and stay focussed on the small things and I’m really thankful that I get to be a quarterback in this organization.”
Harris came into the game needing 49 yards to cross the mark and he’d get the job done quickly, finding D’Sean Mimbs for a 23-yard catch with 5:34 to play in the first quarter to get the necessary yards. He’d go on to pass for 401 yards in the game while leading Saskatchewan to their sixth win of the season.

“To be able to don the Green and White and be here is cool to me and I’ll never, ever take it for granted,” Harris said. “I’m really thankful that I get to do this and to join the 40K club is pretty cool. I think it just means I’m getting a little older, though.”
According to Roughriders historian Rob Vanstone — you can read his take on the milestone right here — Harris now has 40,352 yards for his career and is only 182 yards away from Tracy Ham in 11th place all-time in the CFL. Then it’s another 1,003 yards to catch Doug Flutie.
The Roughriders are off until Tuesday when they return to the field to to prepare for Saturday’s match-up in Hamilton against the Tiger-Cats.
