The Saskatchewan Roughriders are contemplating a kicking change to Dawson Hodge from Alex Hale for their upcoming game Saturday against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
“We’ll see,” coach Corey Mace told reporters in Regina on Wednesday. “We’ll make a decision at the end of the week.”
The Riders signed Hodge last Thursday amid early season struggles from Hale, who made 12 of 17 field-goal attempts to that point and just one of five from 40 yards or more.
However, Hale’s last game was perhaps the best of his CFL freshman campaign. The Australian was successful on both his field-goal tries, from 35 and 14 yards, and made all four of his point-after converts.
Hodge took every kicking rep at Wednesday’s practice and was challenged just like the kickers were at training camp in Saskatoon. The Coquitlam, B.C., native made all his kicks, including a 57-yard field goal.
“We put Dawson through the ringer like we did with the kickers at camp,” Mace said. “He never had a chance to do that. We put him through the ringer. A little pressure-cooker situation.
“He looked pretty good.”
