REGINA — Two important agenda items comprise the Wednesday, Aug. 19 Regina executive committee meeting.
These include:
New community hub
The Growing Young Movers (GYM) is looking to construct a new Building Futures Collective Hub facility.
The facility would help maintain vacant lots in North Central, supporting efforts to build new housing in the neighbourhood.
Per a report, the city intends to buy property from the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and transfer it to GYM for $1. The city would also provide $300,000 from its housing accelerator fund for the building’s development and a five-year tax exemption.
Affordable housing revision
The city is looking to revise its affordable housing lands policy (AHLP).
Per the report, the AHLP is a framework for acquiring, strategically holding and disposing of land to support the development of affordable, supportive and transitional housing under the city council’s land development and disposition strategy.
Under the revision, the city is looking to expand eligibility to purchase or lease Regina-owned properties for-profit builders, start-up housing providers, social enterprises, and Indigenous governments or economic development corporations.
The proposed change would spur development while eliminating barriers for non-profits who don’t have the funds to undertake new expensive housing projects on their own, as the city could sell or lease property from its land bank for $100,000 or less without a public offering.
Both items would require final approval at the Aug 26. council meeting.
Meanwhile, Wednesday’s exec committee meeting begins at 9 a.m.
