Every game, don’t miss Barney Shynkaruk’s Behind the Face Mask, taking a closer look at your favourite Saskatchewan Roughriders.
This week, Mike Rose.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Behind the face mask this week, Mike Rose. He was on the SportsCage last year. He doesn't remember; that's okay.
When you search Mike Rose out on Google, do you know what the most famous Mike Rose is out there?
Mike Rose:
There's a guy from Calgary, really a rich guy, and then there's a white linebacker who I think played for the Chiefs.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Grammy Award-winning Jamaican reggae guy. Are you a reggae guy?
Mike Rose:
I mean, I'd listen to it if it was there.
Barney Shynkaruk:
What do you listen to when you want to chill out, maybe post-game, after a game?
Mike Rose:
I listen to some James Brown.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Really? Okay. What was the first concert you ever went to as a kid?
Mike Rose:
Oh, I was broke, so I didn't go to any concerts as a kid. First concert was in college. It was actually a Fetty Wap concert. Pretty mid.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Who's somebody that you haven't seen musically that you'd want to go to their concert right now?
Mike Rose:
That I want to? Yeah. Definitely want to see Future.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Who's that?
Mike Rose:
He's a rapper.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Okay, there we go. Karaoke, what's your go-to if you've got one song? Maybe you're with the guys.
Mike Rose:
George Michael's Careless Whisper.
Barney Shynkaruk:
What?
Mike Rose:
I know every word.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Are you good at it?
Mike Rose:
Yeah.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Wow, okay. Didn't expect that one.
What was your high school nickname? What was the high school nickname?
Mike Rose:
I've never had a nickname. I've always been Mike Rose.
Barney Shynkaruk:
What did you play in high school? Positions?
Mike Rose:
Linebacker, running back, DB, punted.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Really? Yeah. Were you a good punter? So if things went sideways, they wouldn't be like, "Who can punt here?"
Mike Rose:
No, I was just somebody who could do a little bit of everything, so I just punted.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Were you a good running back?
Mike Rose:
No, I can get downhill.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Yeah? There are more go-through guys than around guys?
Mike Rose:
Yeah.
Barney Shynkaruk:
What's the family dynamic like? What's mom and dad, brothers, sisters?
Mike Rose:
I have three sisters, but I was the oldest, so they couldn't do anything.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Are they athletes?
Mike Rose:
Nah, they're just narps.
Barney Shynkaruk:
What if you were going on a romantic date? You have to cook, though. What's your go-to?
Mike Rose:
My wife would say I would make Rotel queso.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Why is that?
Mike Rose:
Because that is what I'm gonna cook.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Yeah?
Mike Rose:
Stick to what you're good at.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Okay. If you're with the guys here and we've got a video game competition, what game would you not be beat at when it comes to video games?
Mike Rose:
Super Smash Bros. and Tetris.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Tetris?
Mike Rose:
Yeah.
Barney Shynkaruk:
How's your Madden game?
Mike Rose:
I don't play Madden anymore.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Weren't you? Did you back in the day, though?
Mike Rose:
In 2017, a guy named Michael Kashak from the McMaster people was my roommate. I beat him every day in Madden, and I told him, "If you ever beat me in Madden, I will never play Madden again."
And on the last day before the Grey Cup, he beat me in Madden, and I have not played Madden since.
The retirement game.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Okay, so when you were on the SportsCage, you talked about signing with the Giants, got that signing bonus, and then the signing bonus, you spent it pretty quickly. Take us through that story again.
Mike Rose:
Oh, I got the money, gave some to my mom, and gave some to myself, for sure. You know.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Did you buy a car or anything?
Mike Rose:
No, I didn't do anything.
Barney Shynkaruk:
No?
Mike Rose:
No. I think I still got some of that money, to be honest. I'm a cheap guy.
Barney Shynkaruk:
What did you buy Mom again?
Mike Rose:
I just gave her some money.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Really?
Mike Rose:
Yeah, I just gave it to her.
Barney Shynkaruk:
That's great.
Coach, you've learned the most from in your career?
Mike Rose:
Probably Mace.
Barney Shynkaruk:
You got, in your future, what do you got? Maybe some coaching, broadcasting. What would you like to do?
Mike Rose:
Whoever's hiring, I would love to coach or scout. Whatever FedEx is calling, I'm going to FedEx, man.
Barney Shynkaruk:
What's your pre-game, game-day, let's say at home? What's your pre-game routine? What do you eat? What's your routine?
Mike Rose:
These days, man, I'm just trying to eat something healthy and just trying to throw something healthy in there and some rice. That's it.
Barney Shynkaruk:
Mike Rose, Tetris guy, James Brown, Behind the Face Mask. Thanks.
Mike Rose:
I appreciate it, y'all.
