ESTEVAN, Sask. — Estevan Police Service (EPS) members were kept busy responding to calls for service from Aug. 28-30.
On Aug. 28, EPS received a report of an erratic driver approaching Estevan on Highway 39W. Members located the vehicle travelling 111 km/h in the 80 km/h zone. Based on these observations and a statement provided by the complainant, the driver was issued a ticket for driving without due care and attention.
In another incident, an investigation that was initiated in mid-August into an assault causing bodily harm resulted in the 35-year-old male suspect being arrested during a traffic stop on day shift. The man was remanded in custody and will appear in Estevan Provincial Court on Aug. 31 to speak to the charge.
A complaint of a customer accusing staff at a west-end business of stealing $50 from her and then assaulting an employee with a cup before driving away was received. The matter remains under investigation and a suspect has been identified.
A two-vehicle collision was attended to by patrol members at the intersection of Kensington Avenue and King Street. Both vehicles were no longer driveable and were towed from the scene. The matter remains under investigation.
A report of several youth using fake identification cards at a downtown liquor establishment was investigated during the night shift. Members spoke with several youth on scene and issued one male youth a ticket under the Alcohol Gaming Regulations for using fraudulent identification. He was subsequently released to his parents.
Multiple compliance checks were conducted on individuals bound by court-ordered conditions during the night shift. All those checked were found to be complying with their respective conditions.
Also on Aug. 28, a report of a break and enter at a residence in the city centre area was investigated after a landlord observed a light on in the home after having evicted renters several days prior. Members attended the scene and cleared the buildings, including the use of a drone to enter a loft area. No one was located on scene and no damage to the residence was observed.
On Aug. 29, EPS received a report of an individual breaching court-ordered conditions by attending a prohibited residence. The man was located at that residence and subsequently arrested, charged and released with a future court date to speak to the matter.
A report of a badger being observed underneath a neighbour’s concrete steps was received. There was no imminent danger and the matter was referred to Estevan conservation officers for additional followup.
Police conducted a well-being check on a man at the request of family members. Members located the individual and spoke with him, and confirmed that he was safe and not in need of support from any available resources.
A report of a vehicle bumping into a pedestrian while they were crossing the roadway was received. No injuries occurred as a result of the contact. Statements were obtained and the matter remains under investigation.
A traffic stop during the day shift resulted in the 61-year-old male driver from Estevan being arrested for impaired driving after he showed signs of impairment and failed a roadside breath test. He was transported to EPS, where he provided samples of breath with readings of 100 mg% and 90 mg%. He was charged, processed and subsequently released and will appear in Estevan Provincial Court at a future date to speak to the matter.
During the night shift, EPS members responded to a domestic disturbance in the Eastend area of Estevan. Through the investigation, it was determined that an assault had occurred, which resulted in the arrest of a 47-year-old woman and a 25-year-old woman. Both were charged and subsequently released on conditions with future court dates set to speak to the matter.
EPS members conducted a well-being check on a woman after her spouse reported receiving a text from an unknown individual stating that they had found her phone in a valley. The woman was found to be safe and well, and not in need of assistance.
Also on Aug. 29, several reports of a grossly intoxicated man causing a disturbance south of Estevan were received. Members attended and located the male subject and arrested him for being intoxicated in public. To ensure his safety, he was lodged in cells and will be released once sober and able to care for himself.
On Aug. 30, EPS members observed an individual actively breaching a court-ordered condition by having contact with a second person. The subject was intoxicated at the time of contact with police and was arrested and lodged in cells to appear in Estevan Provincial Court on Aug. 31.
Police responded to several calls regarding a separating couple who were involved in a property dispute. Officers attended and kept the peace while the former couple dealt with the property, and no further issues occurred while police were on scene.
EPS members investigated a report of a sexual assault of a youth, reported to have occurred earlier in the month. As a result of the investigation, a 36-year-old man was arrested and charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and distributing sexually explicit images to a minor. He was lodged in cells to appear in court on Aug. 31 to speak to the charges.
In another incident, a two-vehicle collision was reported in which one of the vehicles was registered in another province. No injuries were reported, no tow truck was required and alcohol was not a factor. The parties exchanged information, and EPS completed a collision report to be forwarded to SGI.
The RCMP located a vehicle reported stolen out of Estevan earlier in the month that had been damaged and abandoned. An EPS forensic identification officer processed the vehicle and located several items of physical evidence which may assist in identifying those involved in the theft. The matter remains under investigation.
EPS members responded to a complaint of a woman causing a disturbance at the hospital. On arrival, members observed that the woman appeared to be under the influence of drugs and was acting erratically. To prevent a continuation of the disturbance, the woman was arrested for being intoxicated in public and lodged in cells until sober.
A complaint of a burglar alarm at a local financial business was attended to by EPS members. The building was cleared, no damage was observed and no one was found on scene.
Also on Aug. 30, EPS responded to a 911 call from a woman who had consumed illicit drugs and, as a result, was frightened for her well-being. Members located the woman in the Eastend area of Estevan and transported her to the hospital for assessment.
