WEYBURN, Sask. — The Weyburn Police Service responded to 109 calls for service during the week of Aug. 24–30.
Road-rate incident leads to arrest
On Aug. 25, Weyburn police received a complaint involving two adult males operating separate vehicles. It was reported that one of the males pursued the other in his vehicle before exiting and brandishing an expandable baton. The suspect struck at the victim and his vehicle with the baton. The victim was able to drive away from the area and contacted police.
Police later located and arrested the suspect. He was charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and breach of a probation order. The male was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on a later date.
Fuel-theft trend continues after U-Haul targeted
On Aug. 26, police received another report of a vehicle fuel tank being drilled and gasoline stolen. In this occurrence, a U-Haul truck parked at a compound was targeted.
Police haven’t identified any suspects at this time. As similar incidents have been reported, members of the public and local businesses are encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity or similar occurrences to police.
Three-vehicle chain reaction collision sends driver to hospital
While on patrol on Aug. 28, police came upon a three-vehicle collision that had just occurred at 16th Street and Ebel Road. Due to the apparent severity of the collision, Weyburn Fire Services and EMS were requested to attend.
The investigation determined that an adult female driver was stopped on 16th Street waiting to turn left onto Ebel Road. An adult male driving behind her did not observe the stopped vehicle in time and struck it from behind. The impact pushed the female driver's vehicle into the oncoming lane, where it was struck head-on by a northbound vehicle.
The male driver was charged with driving without due care and attention. The female driver who was struck from behind was transported to hospital by EMS with injuries. All three vehicles required towing from the scene.
Domestic assault suspect arrested after returning to scene
On Aug. 25, police were called to a domestic disturbance at a residence in Weyburn. Upon arrival, officers learned that an adult male had left the residence after allegedly assaulting an adult female.
While police were searching for the male, he returned to the residence and was arrested. He was charged with assault. As the male was intoxicated by alcohol, he was held in cells until sober and subsequently released with conditions, including having no contact with the victim.
Donation box stolen from Heritage Village office
On the evening of Aug. 25, police received a report of a break and enter at the Heritage Village office. Money was stolen from a donation box inside the building.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Surge in mental health calls, including suspected overdoses
The Weyburn Police Service responded to 35 mental health and wellbeing-related occurrences during the past week.
Police say of particular concern were several occurrences involving individuals requiring assistance following suspected drug use, including suspected fentanyl use. EMS assisted police in transporting individuals to hospital for assessment and medical care.
The Weyburn Police Service reminds the public that suspected drug overdoses are medical emergencies. Anyone who believes someone may be experiencing an overdose should call 911 immediately.
